December Mini-Recitals Presented
During the break at our December session we enjoyed a lovely set of performances from Eric's group and from our Loud Instruments group. The music was a real treat, and it was also fascinating to learn a bit about the historical instruments played in the Loud Group. We hope to have more mini-recitals at future meetings.
Spring Ensemble Coaches
Heloise, our tireless BRS Music Director, has been working on finalizing the coaches for our Spring Term. As of this writing these will be:
Fall 2013 Group - Spring 2014 Group
Eric's Group - Sheila Beardslee
Sheila's Group - Lisle Kulbach
Emily's Group - Na'ama Lion
Marilyn's Group - Marilyn Boenau
Heloise will be reviewing the groupings in advance of the January meeting.
Spring Full-Day Workshop coming on Saturday, April 5, 2014
Exciting plans are in the works for the upcoming Spring Workshop--mark your calendar and save the date! It will be a full-day workshop for recorders and strings. New this year will be a half-day workshop session for players of early loud wind instruments. Heloise has been busy lining up our coaches for the April workshop, and we hope to announce them in January or February. Watch this space for details.
As mentioned at the November meeting, discussions are also underway regarding a Prescott renaissance instrument workshop sometime this spring. Also coming this spring, another half-day workshop for low recorders. Stay tuned!
Peter Dixon wins ARS Composition Competition!
BRS's own Peter Dixon has won the American Recorder Society's 75th Anniversary Composition Competition in the recorder quartet category, with his work "Western Union." His piece will be published by the ARS as a Special Members' Library ARS is 75! Edition, and it will also be published in American Recorder magazine during 2014. Congratulations, Peter!
Erich Katz Manuscript Gift
A bit of BRS's history recently re-surfaced in the form of an original Erich Katz manuscript which the composer had kindly given to BRS as a contribution to a fundraising auction BRS held in 1970. It was part of the estate of a recently deceased music educator, who had presumably won the manuscript in the auction. The manuscript was offered back to BRS for our library, but as the piece was not a recorder consort work, the BRS Board decided that it would best be housed with Erich Katz's papers in the archive dedicated to him at Regis University in Denver, CO. Erich Katz was music director of ARS from 1943-1959, and he helped shape the recorder and early music movements in the United States. His life story is both fascinating and inspiring (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erich_Katz
). A copy of the manuscript, titled "The Eternal Day: A Cycle of Songs for Mezzo-soprano, Alto Recorder (or Flute), and Tenor Viol (or Viola)," was kindly given to us. If you are interested in this piece of music, please speak to one of the Board members.
