 BRS's 61st Year!
September 2015
In This Issue

Register now for the 2015-2016 season!

If you play recorders, baroque flute or other early winds, or baroque strings, we're looking forward to making music with you! Please join us for the 2015-2016 season, our 61st year of playing together.

Our BRS ensemble groups meet at Lesley University's University Hall in Porter Square, Cambridge one Sunday evening per month, from 6:30-9:00PM. We take a break mid-evening for socializing and refreshments.

Please register and then RSVP for our season opener:  Sunday, September 20, 6:30-9:00PM.

We encourage you to bring a snack to share for our September meeting--savory or sweet nibbles, fruit, or something to drink. We provide paper goods. Beginning in October, we ask a different ensemble group to provide refreshments each month--watch the newsletter for your group's assignment.
Announcing our Fall 2015 Coaches!

BRS is pleased to announce our coaches for the fall:
  • Recorder Ensembles: Emily O'Brien, Carol Lewis, Dan Meyers
  • Loud Group: Marilyn Boenau
  • Renaissance Flute: Na'ama Lion
Many thanks to the coaches for agreeing to work with us.
Ensemble Offerings for 2015-2016

Ability-matched ensembles for recorders, baroque flutes, and strings:
  • You will be placed in a group with players of similar skills and experience.
  • You will play with the same group and the same coach (if possible) for the semester.
  • Music will include a variety of styles and periods.
  • Advance registration is very important for the success of these groups. The more pre-registered members, the more effectively we can match players and coaches.
Loud Band for players of all the various early winds and percussion:
  • All loud wind instruments welcome!  Shawms, sackbuts, dulcians, cornettos, serpents, and anything else you want to try.
  • This is a mixed-level ensemble -- you don't have to be an expert! A supportive environment for learning and fun.
New! Renaissance Flute Ensemble with Na'ama Lion:
  • This season we are excited to announce a new ensemble for renaissance/early flute players coached by Na'ama Lion.
  • Sign up for the fall semester, with the possibility of continuing in the spring.
  • Without sufficient interest we will not be able to offer this ensemble, so please register for this very special offering as soon as possible.
Membership Options for 2015-2016

See the BRS Website for online and mail-in registration and payment forms.

Basic Membership:
$30, or $20 for seniors, full-time students, ARS, R/EMM members
Basic members can attend single ensemble sessions at the member discount rate of $20 per session. Even if you don't attend regularly, becoming a basic member shows your support for BRS goals and allows you to have a voice in BRS planning and to vote at the annual meeting. (Basic membership fee is tax-deductible.)

Full-year Ensemble Membership:
$155, or $135 for seniors, full-time students, ARS, R/EMM members
Attend all nine monthly sessions! By becoming an ensemble member, you are helping BRS plan coaching and placement most effectively. As with basic membership, you have a voice in BRS planning and can vote at the annual meeting. (A portion of the ensemble membership fee equivalent to the basic membership fee is tax-deductible.)

Fall-semester Renaissance Flute Ensemble Membership:
$70, or $60 for seniors, full-time students, ARS, R/EMM members

Attend four monthly sessions (September through December) at ensemble member rates.

Note: If our membership fees would be a hardship, a limited number of scholarships are available.  Contact the BRS treasurer for a confidential discussion of your situation.
Fall Workshop for Low Recorders Planned

Based on the success of last year's workshop, we will again offer a special half-day for players who love to play low recorders: tenor, bass, C-bass, Great bass, or Contra-bass. Watch for dates and registration details coming soon.

We will be in need of recorders lower than bass to use in this workshop. If you have one that you can lend, we would be most grateful if we could arrange to borrow it for this workshop.
Tom Zajac

BRS board, teachers, and members were saddened by the passing of our friend and teacher, Tom Zajak. Tom has been part of the early music family in the US for many years and he will be dearly missed. We extend our condolences to his family and friends.
