The Boston Recorder Society is looking for a new home!

The Boston Recorder Society greatly appreciates the generosity of Painters & Allied Trades District Council #35 in making their building available to us without charge for our meetings. We will continue to meet there at least through May 2008.

Unfortunately, Roslindale is a long commute for the majority of Boston-area recorder players. We believe that BRS would better serve the recorder-playing community if we could find a more central location for our meetings.

The Location Search Committee is coordinating this effort. If you have a suggestion for us, please contact Lisa Gay at 781-646-9645 or lisa@quilisma.us. We welcome any kind of help with the search, whether or not you’re a member of BRS.

Before you contact us about a possible location, please read the following criteria to see if the location fits our needs:

  1. Our new location must be easy to get to.
    • Centrally located
    • Convenient to public transit (ideally, near a T station)
    • Enough free parking for about 20 cars, close enough that carrying large instrument cases is not difficult
  2. The space must be accessible.
    • Handicapped parking near the entrance
    • Ramps or elevators to get to all the rooms we’re using
  3. The rooms must work for our meeting format.
    • At least five rooms: one large enough for 30-40 musicians with music stands, the others large enough for 9
    • Little or no sound carrying from room to room
    • Heated in cold months, air conditioned in hot months
    • Available on Sunday evenings 6:30-10 PM September through May
  4. The site management must be reliable.
    • Ability to book monthly dates (September through May) for the entire season by July (often a problem with schools that don’t book their spaces for spring term until late autumn)
    • Solid bookings: no reputation for cancellations, double bookings, or rescheduling
    • A reliable arrangement for opening the building and rooms for meetings and locking up afterward
  5. The rent must be affordable. What we would consider affordable might vary, depending on whether we believe the location is likely to draw more tuition-paying members. In any case, the total rent (for all rooms, not per room) must be no higher than $150 per monthly meeting. If you are inquiring about rent at a potential location, please be sure to mention that BRS is a registered non-profit organization.

Our requirements for a summer meeting location are similar, except that in the summer we need only one large room, and the building must be available on a weekday evening (traditionally Wednesdays) until 10:30 PM.
